INTRODUCTION
Penny Appeal Pakistan is a humanitarian and development organization dedicated to building resilient communities through sustainable, climate-smart, and inclusive programming. Under its WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and climate change portfolio, Penny Appeal will pilot 10 floating wetland systems in several village-level sewage ponds in District Sujawal. This region is highly vulnerable to climate-related challenges and lacks formal sewage treatment infrastructure.
The initiative aims to demonstrate a low-cost, climate-resilient solution for wastewater management in rural settings. The project will involve using 10 biodegradable platforms, each measuring 10 square feet, planted with local aquatic vegetation, to naturally treat wastewater and raise awareness of environmentally sustainable practices that can be scaled across other vulnerable communities.
Penny Appeal Pakistan will introduce a floating wetland pilot system in one village sewage pond, using an approximately 10-square-foot biodegradable platform planted with local aquatic vegetation. Designed based on available surface area, the floating wetland will naturally treat wastewater by absorbing contaminants and promoting microbial activity. This low-cost, climate-resilient solution is ideal for rural settings lacking formal sewage treatment infrastructure. Training will be provided to WASH Committees and residents from both the host and nearby villages to ensure proper upkeep and encourage replication. The initiative not only improves wastewater management but also raises awareness of environmentally sustainable practices that can be scaled across other vulnerable communities.
OBJECTIVE OF THE CONSULTANCY
The objective of this consultancy is to design, oversee the installation, and initiate the performance monitoring of a 10-pilot floating wetland system. This initiative will serve as a model for sustainable wastewater management that can be replicated in other communities lacking formal sewage infrastructure.
